Hi, I've been trying to locate a book I read as a child (70's) in which the character does not want to go to school. Instead he wants to visit his friends, including the wise old owl. I think he showed up at owl's house, only to find that owl wasn't home. There was a bench outside, with a sign that read "wet paint" -but the character assumed it said "be back in 5 minutes." So, the character took a seat to wait, and of course ends up with wet paint on his pants. The moral of the story is that he needed to go to school so he could learn to read. Any help finding this title would be greatly appreciated!
